Young pioneers find tranquility in Barrydale

Young homebuyers have discovered the quiet charm of Barrydale, the gateway to the Klein Karoo, and are bringing new skills to the village.

Barrydale has long been a favourite country retreat for Capetonians buying second homes, says Homenet's resident agent, Sandra Thom. "But about two years ago young people tired of the rat race in big cities started relocating to Barrydale to raise their families.

"And one thing they all have in common is a pioneering spirit - there are very few job opportunities here and they have to start up their own businesses and enterprises. They bring new ideas and are a great economic asset to the village."

Part of Barrydale's attraction is its spectacular setting in the Tradouw valley with the Langeberg mountains framing it on one side and green hills on the other. "It is a charming village bisected by the Huisrivier and residents still get irrigation water along the old furrows lining the streets.

"It is a small village that has agriculture to thank for it existence and it still serves the commercial needs of surrounding fruit farmers. And there is very little industry to compromise the rural ambience of the area," Thom says.

But Route 62 leading to Oudtshoorn brings tourists through the town. Apart from the scenery, including the views of fynbos and proteas and spectacular rock formations on the winding Tradouw Pass leading out of the valley on the road to Swellendam, tourists are keen to sample the premier produce of the local wine cellar - not least of which is the world-famous Joseph Barry brandy.

Thom says small two-bedroom homes in the village now cost R620 000 and up while most homes fall in the R800 000 to R1m range.

"But a bargain currently on our books is a bed-and-breakfast undertaking available at the reduced price of R1,55m. The relatively new homestead in the Cape Dutch style has four en-suite bedrooms - two currently used for guests - and there is a swimming pool, double garage and a beautiful garden on a stand of just less than 3000sqm."
