About 25 organisations in the UAE have expressed an interest in the buildingSmart Middle East chapter, said a senior official.

"This includes government authorities, users, academics and vendors after about three weeks of front line activity," said David Jelling, a business consultant with the not-for-profit body.

BuildingSmart aims to become a standard method for smart, sustainable construction throughout the entire life cycle of a facility.

Committed members include Tekla, BIM Engineering Solutions, Mammut Group, Al Rashid Investments, AUD and CAPpmc.

The body will be formally launched in Abu Dhabi in November this year.

"The mission is to bring about co-ordinated change in the UAE and the region for the improvement of productivity, efficiency and sustainability in the construction and facilities management industry. The chapter is doing this by promoting, adapting and improving open standards for interoperability in the global building and facilities management industry," said Jelling. "The US chapter, for instance, is in its third year and has received funding from the federal government."
