Landlords are being strongly urged to renovate their rental properties to make them environmentally friendly as part of a new strategy entitled the Green Deal, which has been formulated by climate change secretary Chris Huhne, who recently unveiled details of the plans.

n the approaching energy bill it will be demanded that tenants requesting reasonable improvements to be made to the property they are renting that will improve their energy efficiency will have them carried out after 2015. However, the upfront costs of carrying out eco-friendly modifications will not have to be covered by landlord insurance holders.

Another interesting section of the Green Deal strategy specifies that local authorities shall have the power to insist that private rental sector professionals carry out the refurbishment of the poorest performing rental properties to make them more appealing to prospective tenants.

“The Green Deal is about making people feel as warm as toast in their homes,” Mr Huhne stated. “At a time of increasing gas prices, energy efficiency is a no-brainer.”
