During the 1990s, the Dankner family was an economic power in Israel. They owned the controlling interest in Salt Industries, which does make salt and which also owned a controlling interest in Hapoalim, Israel's biggest bank. They owned Dor Chemicals and Dankner Investments, a holding company.

The country's construction industry is in a crisis, and ideas for rescuing it are coming from all sides - mostly involving plans that promote construction in outlying areas, which are simultaneously aimed at helping and strengthening those areas. Previous attempts in this vein have shown that the contractors are the big winners, apartment buyers are the main losers, and the real estate market in the periphery declines as soon as such campaigns are over.

Guy (all names of apartment buyers are fictitious) is a high-tech entrepreneur. Newly married and 33 years old, he can't sleep at night. Five months ago, the week he got married, Guy and his brand-new wife bought the apartment in Tel Aviv, in which they'd been living as tenants before the nuptials. They meant to finance most of the NIS 1.8 million cost by selling his bachelor pad. But it didn't sell, they'd already signed the contract to buy the new apartment and now the young couple are stressed out. You could say that the timing of all this is particularly awful, giving the mounting signs of recession.
