IN 1904, when Charles A. Platt was commissioned to design an artists’ co-op studio building on 66th Street and Lexington Avenue, he was known as the country’s foremost architect of country houses, all heavily influenced by the style of the Italian Renaissance. The 11-story building was not only Mr. Platt’s first large-scale urban commission; it would also become his New York City home.
